How can the havens help women?

FlowersAt the havens we help you if you have been raped or sexually assaulted. We help you deal with and recover from the emotional and physical effects of the assault.

We do it with only your interests at heart. And we treat you with respect.

What do we do?

Our experienced staff provide:

  • Counselling
  • Psychological therapy
  • Emotional support

And we can refer you to other specific support services, if they can provide better help.

Our specialist medical teams offer:

  • First aid and advice
  • Emergency contraception
  • Advice and treatments for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • A forensic examination to collect evidence from the assault.

The forensic examination is voluntary. It will only happen if you say it can.

Remember - it’s entirely up to you which of these services you decide to use.

And after that?

It’s after your first visit that the emotional support really starts. You will be given an appointment for follow-up care. At this session you can talk to a counsellor/health adviser about how you feel and about options for counselling or psychological therapy. The counsellor/health adviser can make arrangements as appropriate.

You will also be offered a sexual health screening.

The follow-up appointment is usually 7-10 days after the assault.

You can use any of the services at The Havens without involving the police.
If you do decide to report the assault or rape to the police, we will advise you, help you and guide you through the process.

Our facilities

All our centres have showers, toiletries and refreshments. We provide new clothes if you need to give up your own as evidence.

If you need an interpreter, we can provide experienced professionals, all bound by strict codes of confidentiality.

We are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, but you must phone first to make an appointment.
