How can the havens help men?

Coffee cupIf you are a man who has been raped or sexually assaulted, the havens can help you. Although the majority of people who come to The Havens are women, our staff are highly qualified and are knowledgeable and experienced in dealing with male rape and sexual assault.

Please be assured – we will understand. And we will treat you with respect.

What do we do?

We will help you deal with and recover from both the emotional and physical effects of the assault.

Our experienced trauma experts provide:

  • counselling
  • emotional support

And we can refer you to other specific support services, if they can provide better help.

Our specialist medical teams offer:

  • first aid and advice
  • advice and treatments for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • a forensic examination to collect evidence from the assault.
  • The forensic examination is voluntary. It will only happen if you say it can.

Remember - it’s entirely up to you which of these services you decide to use.

And after that?

It’s after your first visit that the emotional support really starts. You will be given an appointment for follow-up care. At this session you can talk to a counsellor/health adviser about how you feel and about options for counselling. The counsellor/health adviser can make arrangements as appropriate.
You will also be offered a sexual health screening.
The follow-up appointment is usually 7-10 days after the assault.

You can use any of the services at The Havens without involving the police.
If you do decide to report the assault or rape to the police, we will advise you, help you and guide you through the process.

What about seeing a male doctor?

For your first visit to The Havens that won’t be possible. All of the Sexual Offences Examiners are female, so your forensic examination will be carried out by a woman doctor. All the doctors are skilled and experienced in male examinations and will of course treat you with dignity. It may be possible to arrange for a male chaperone if you want one.

At your follow-up appointments, if you would prefer to see a male doctor, you can attend The Haven in Whitechapel for sexual health services. In Whitechapel there is a dedicated male clinic every fortnight, which has a male consultant. It is run by a team which is highly experienced in male sexual assault.

It doesn’t matter if Whitechapel isn’t the nearest of The Havens to you, you can still attend this clinic if you want to see a male doctor.

You can ask the staff to organise this for you.

Alternatively you can phone The Haven Whitechapel directly (020 7247 4787) to make an appointment
